First Notes on Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger--One Nice Surprise and Two Glitches So Far: We have installed Mac OS X 10.4 (Build 8a428) on several Mac desktops, including a 20" iMac G5 that is connected to a home network via an Apple AirPort Extreme card and an AirPort Express base station.

The nice surprise is that Tiger runs faster than Panther on the 20" iMac G5, a desktop with a single 1.8GHz G5. Just how much faster? Well, enough to notice it without objective measurements. Look for our comprehensive "How Fast Is It?" article on Tiger to be posted on Monday.

The first glitch is that the 20" iMac G5 does not always automatically connect to the AirPort Express base station on startup. We will be investigating this further with several Macs, including PowerBooks, and several types of base stations.

The second glitch is that our Apple Wireless (Bluetooth) Keyboard was not automatically recognized by our iMac G5 on two restarts. We had to re-pair it. Curiously the Apple Wireless (Bluetooth) Mouse was immediately recognized with no problem. We will also check out this problem on another Mac, so stay tuned this weekend! [Dana Baggett]

Brief Hands-On Report--TechTool Pro v4.0.4 Update: Micromat released TechTool Pro Update v4.0.4. It is available for download from this Micromat Web page. The file updates either v4.0.1 or 4.0.2 to v4.0.4.

What's New in Version 4.0.4

  • Mac OS X v10.4 "Tiger" Compatibility.
  • Corrected reported issues with eDrive creation.
  • Corrected iMac G5 Main Memory information drawer layout.
  • Corrected Video Memory information drawer for older machines.
  • Corrected Optimization window display issue.
  • Corrected Fast User Switching issue.
  • Corrected Gigabit connection speed in Network test.
  • Additional FireWire hard drive support in Drives category.
  • Additional support for Mobility Radeon 9700 in Video Memory test.
  • Enhanced USB information drawer display.
  • Added support for Case-sensitive volumes.
  • Global updates for identifying new machines and hardware.
  • Other minor fixes and updates.

We downloaded and installed TechToolPro 4.0.4 without problems. It features a "smart" installer that found older versions installed on our iMac G5 hard drive, eDrive and FireWire external HD. It give us an opportunity to approve upgrading each one before doing so. We were able to open the application successfully and boot into the eDrive without problems.

The only downside was that on the iMac G5 the installer tossed the former installed version into the Trash and we had to re-enter our TTP4 serial number all over again. But on our original Tangerine iBook, the new application retained the serial number from the old one even though the prior app was also tossed into the Trash. [Dana Baggett]

Severe Problems with ATI Displays 4.5 and ATI Radeon X800 Mac Edition Graphics Card: Two weeks ago, we finally got our ATI Radeon X800 Mac Edition graphics card, the hottest graphics card for the Mac according to early tests. We had ordered our card in early February but ATI's initial supply was limited and it was depleted quickly. So we waited 2 months to test it against our Nvidia 6800 Ultra DDL with our dual 2.5GHz Power Mac G5 and 30" Cinema Display.

When it arrived, we quickly installed it and briefly tried it out. At the settings that we play Call of Duty and Halo, the X800 was a few fps faster than the 6800 Ultra. We had planned to do a full test the following weekend for publication last Monday but Mac OS X 10.3.9 came out so we delayed our plans until this past weekend. Last week, ATI released a new firmware update for the X800 and an ATI Displays update to 4.5. Wanting to use the latest software in our review and tests, we updated our X800's firmware and installed ATI Displays 4.5 late last week. On reboot, we got a kernel panic...!

The kernel panic (dark gray screen telling one to restart in several languages) happened every time we rebooted at exactly the same spot, right after the gray screen with dark gray Apple logo. Sometimes that was where the G5 froze and sometimes despite the kernal panic it continued booting to a blue screen or partial desktop but the G5 was always frozen, i.e. no cursor movement from the mouse or keyboard.

We tried resetting NVRAM and PRAM but it did not fix the problem. We booted from a backup drive and exchanged the new ATI ROM Xtender (1.2.4f3) installed with ATI Displays 4.5 with the one installed with ATI Displays 4.4 (1.1.3) and got the G5 to boot successfully several times but then G5 once again succombed to the kernel panic on startup. Unfortunately, the firmware update is not reversible, at least not yet.

This is apparently a fairly widespread problem (see this Accelerate Your Mac web page) but not everyone encounters it. Our service ticket with ATI remains open. We had hoped a fix would be forthcoming before this past weekend but it wasn't. We'll report when a solution is found and conduct our speed tests right after. [Bill Fox]

This update will correct issues affecting some Java users following the installation of Mac OS X v10.3.9 Software Update.

The Java Update appeared in our Software Update window on all of our Macs, including Power Mac G5, iMac G5, several PowerBooks and an original clamshell iBook, running Mac OS X 10.3.9 despite all of them having passed the test suggested in the KBase article. So we downloaded and installed the Java Update in all of them. No problems were encountered with their installation and immediate use. [Bill Fox & Dana Baggett]

Commentary: Adobe-Macromedia Merger--Will the Deal Go Through? Adobe announced Monday that it had struck a deal with Macromedia's management to merge for $3.4 billion in Adobe stock. It seems like a good deal for both firms but is this a good deal for consumers of their products? Together, their competitive products dominate several media/graphics software markets, like web authoring (GoLive-Dreamweaver) and illustration (Illustrator-Freehand), and their combine will have a clear monopoly. On the other hand, many of their other products are either not totally overlapping, like Photoshop and Fireworks, or are complementary, like Acrobat and Flash.

Here is their explanation:

The combination of Adobe and Macromedia strengthens our mission of helping people and organizations communicate better. Through the combination of our powerful development, authoring and collaboration tools – and the complementary functionality of PDF and Flash – we have the opportunity to drive an industry-defining technology platform that delivers compelling, rich content and applications across a wide range of devices and operating systems.

By combining the passion and creativity of two leading-edge companies, we will continue driving innovations that are changing the ways people everywhere are experiencing and interacting with information.

We understand the power trip but don't buy the innovation smoke. We believe in the forces of competition and this merger seems more likely to squelch innovation than to "drive" it. Afterall, how innovative is powerful Microsoft? The best it can do is buy innovation, concomittantly stifling any competition.

The merger still has to be approved by shareholders of both public companies. It probably will be approved because forming a powerful, more efficient alliance that can crush any emerging competition is good for investors. The merger also has to be approved by federal regulators who are supposed to look out for the interests of consumers and maintain competition. We hope they do their job and give this deal a thumbs down. [Bill Fox]

Test the Speed of Your Safari 1.3: As we noted in our Mac OS X 10.3.9 hands-on report, Safari 1.3 seems to be much faster than v1.2. According to Dave Hyatt on his blog, Surfin' Safari, the new Safari 1.3 in Mac OS X 10.3.9 Update loads Web pages 35% faster than Safari 1.2 and has better JavaScript performance:

Page Load Performance
Safari 1.3 loads pages overall 35% faster than 1.2 as measured by IBench. In addition to improving the overall page load, Safari 1.3 will display content sooner than 1.2 did, so that subresources don't hold up the initial display of the page.

JavaScript Performance
We have substantially improved the performance of the JavaScript engine in Safari. I encourage you to check out Safari 1.3 on this benchmark for example to see the improvement relative to 1.2.

It also has the same "guts" as the coming Safari 2.0 in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. You can test Safari 1.3's JavaScript speed with BenchJS from this Web site.

We ran BenchJS twice with our dual 2.5GHz Power Mac G5 and got the 16th and 17th fastest times for any browser and OS at 5.68 and 5.69 sec. They were the 3rd and 4th fourth fastest times listed for Mac OS X. The two faster OS X times used Opera 8. The fastest combination seems to Opera 8 with Windows XP according to tests listed on the BenchJS Web page. [Bill Fox]

Mac OS X 10.3.9 Update--How Fast Is It? Late Friday, Apple released Mac OS X 10.3.9, the last 10.3.x update to Panther before releasing Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) on April 29. As frequent readers know, we have benchmarked virtually every release of Mac OS X from the original 10.0 release through 10.3.8 to keep track of the improvements in its speed, a major complaint initially about Max OS X. With the evolution of Mac OS X, Apple has made great strides in speeding it up. That, along with the release of Apple's Power Mac G5 and iMac G5, have mostly eliminated any significant OS speed concerns for its desktop computers. Even on the remaining G4s (i.e. PowerBooks, iBooks and Mac mini) and many legacy G4s and G3s, Mac OS X runs very well these days.

So how fast is it? To determine this we ran our usual suite of speed tests on our test-bed Macs. The speed tests are comprised of a series of "canned" benchmark applications and several so-called "real world" tests that anyone can repeat on their own Mac for comparison by following the steps that we perform.

Our long-term test Mac (since Mac OS X 10.0) has been a mostly stock, 2000-vintage 450 MHz Power Mac G4 Cube with 704MB RAM. With Mac OS X 10.3, Apple began including improvements that are aimed mainly at the G5 CPU and graphics cards with 32MB of video RAM or more (the Cube's has only 16MB) so we also began using our dual 2.5GHz Power Mac G5 with 1.5GB RAM and an Nvidia GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL graphics card in the speed tests.

Here are the results for the G4 Cube using Mac OS X 10.3.9 vs 10.3.8, 10.3 and 10.2.8 (Jaguar). Other versions back to 10.0 can be found in our previous articles:

For the latest Power Mac G5, there are also no performance improvements among the benchmark applications using the Mac OS X 10.3.9 update.

Like most previous Panther releases, 10.3.9 provides no obvious across the board speed improvements. There appears to have been a significant 2D quartz graphics improvement starting with 10.3.7 that was carried through in 10.3.9. There also appears to have been a small OpenGL 3D graphics improvement in 10.3.8 that was continued in 10.3.9.

So how about Mac OS X10.4? Will Tiger provide any speed enhancements among its 200+ improvements over Panther? Look for our "How Fast Is It?" tests following Tiger's release on April 29 to find out. [Bill Fox]

Brief Hands-On Report--Mac OS X 10.3.9 Client and Server: Last night Apple released Mac OS X 10.3.9 update for client and server. They are available for download via the System Preference Software Update pane and as standalone updaters, either as a delta version (client and server, 10.3.8 to 10.3.9) or as a combo version (client and server, 10.3.x to 10.3.9). We recommend the combo version to minimize the chance of any problems.

Here is what Apple says is in the delta updaters, i.e. new for 10.3.9:

Client (Delta) Improvements include:

  • file sharing and directory services reliability for mixed Mac and PC networks
  • Mail, Safari and Stickies application reliability
  • compatibility for third party applications and devices
  • previous standalone security updates
  • Server (Delta) Improvements include:
  • reliability of Open Directory authentication requests, and Active Directory integration
  • AFP performance when listing large files and directories
  • update to Cyrus version 2.2.10 for more reliable email message storage
  • reliability of Ethernet communications on Xserve
  • compatibility for third party applications and devices
  • previous standalone security updates

Server (Delta) Improvements include:

  • reliability of Open Directory authentication requests, and Active Directory integration
  • AFP performance when listing large files and directories
  • update to Cyrus version 2.2.10 for more reliable email message storage
  • reliability of Ethernet communications on Xserve
  • compatibility for third party applications and devices
  • previous standalone security updates

Here are the details on the security aspects:

Kernel

CVE ID: CAN-2005-0969
Impact: A kernel input validation issue can lead to a local denial of service
Description: The Kernel contains syscall emulation functionality that was never used in Mac OS X. Insufficient validation of an input parameter list could result in a heap overflow and a local denial of service through a kernel panic. The issue is addressed by removing the syscall emulation functionality. Credit to Dino Dai Zovi for reporting this issue.

CVE ID: CAN-2005-0970
Impact: Permitting SUID/SGID scripts to be installed could lead to privilege escalation.
Description: Mac OS X inherited the ability to run SUID/SGID scripts from FreeBSD. Apple does not distribute any SUID/SGID scripts, but the system would allow them to be installed or created. This update removes the ability of Mac OS X to run SUID/SGID scripts. Credit to Bruce Murphy of rattus.net and Justin Walker for reporting this issue.

CVE ID: CAN-2005-0971
CERT: VU#212190
Impact: A Kernel stack overflow in the semop() system call could lead to a local privilege escalation.
Description: The incorrect handling of system call arguments could be used to obtain elevated privileges. This update includes a fix to check access to the kernel object.

CVE ID: CAN-2005-0972
CERT: VU#185702
Impact: An integer overflow in the searchfs() system call could allow an unprivileged local user to execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges
Description: The searchfs() system call contains an integer overflow vulnerability that could allow an unprivileged local user to execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges. This update adds input validation on the parameters passed to searchfs() to correct the issue.

CVE ID: CAN-2005-0973
Impact: Local system users can cause a system resource starvation
Description: A vulnerability in the handling of values passed to the setsockopt() call could allow unprivileged local users to exhaust available memory. Credit to Robert Stump <rds3792@cs.rit.com> for reporting this issue.

CVE ID: CAN-2005-0974
CERT: VU#713614
Impact: Local system users can cause a local denial of service
Description: A vulnerability in the nfs_mount() call due to insufficient checks on input values could allow unprivileged local users to create a denial of service via a kernel panic.

CVE ID: CAN-2005-0975
Impact: Local system users can cause a temporary interruption of
system operation
Description: A vulnerability in the parsing of certain executable files could allow unprivileged local users to temporarily suspend system operations. Credit to Neil Archibald for reporting this issue.

Safari

CVE ID: CAN-2005-0976
Impact: Remote sites could cause html and javascript to run in the local domain.
Description: This update closes a vulnerability that allowed remote websites to load javascript to execute in the local domain. Credit to David Remahl for reporting this issue.

We downloaded and installed the client and server editions (combo versions) on a number of Macs, including several PowerBooks. No problems were encountered while updating or while briefly using the new version. The only thing we noticed is that sleep on our PowerBook seems to be improved. Note in the server read me file that there are a number of things that should be done for certain configurations.

We updated with our backup FireWire drive attached to our 17" PowerBook with no apparent problems and it still booted our PowerBooks with 10.3.8 after the update. But it became unbootable after it was updated to 10.3.9. We will proba have to use Carbon Copy Cloner again to restore the backup drive to bootable condition as we had to do with 10.3.8.

Safari seems to load pages faster but that may be due to our internet connection being really good right now. But there doesn't seem to be any hesitation in loading pages as before. Unfortunately, Safari on our 17" PowerBook now quits unexpectedly very frequently [Update: This was fixed by deleting Safari's preference file and relaunching. In Network Security Tools (O'Reilly, US $34.95), the authors Nitesh Dhanjani and Justin Clarke show network administrators how to use popular open source security assessment tools such as Ettercap, Hydra, Metasploit, Nessus, Nitkeo, and Nmap, and then customize them to defend against even the most experienced attackers. While most security books focus on keeping networks and systems secure, "Network Security Tools" also provides information on determining vulnerabilities in web applications. [Bill Fox]

O'Reilly Released Mastering FreeBSD and OpenBSD Security: FreeBSD and OpenBSD are often considered the "other" free operating systems--other than Linux, that is. However, these two BSD-based operating systems have increasingly gained traction in educational institutions, nonprofits, and corporations worldwide. The reason? They provide significant security advantages over Linux. In fact, security is the primary reason that most system administrators use these two platforms. Oddly enough, books that focus specifically on the security aspects of these two operating systems are rare. "It's about time that FreeBSD and OpenBSD--operating systems that tout security as one of their greatest assets--have a book on security," says Yanek Korff, coauthor with Paco Hope and Bruce Potter of Mastering FreeBSD and OpenBSD Security (O'Reilly, $49.95). Korff adds, "Deploying these systems without a firm understanding that security must be thought of in advance is folly." [Bill Fox]

O'Reilly Released Photoshop Elements 3: The Missing Manual: With most of the power of Photoshop--the tool of choice among graphics professionals--Photoshop Elements 3 lets people manipulate their digital images just as they like. But even though Elements is meant for "regular folks," says the author Barbara Brundage, "finding your way around the program has become a lot more complicated than it used to be." And since it doesn't come with a trusty manual, she wrote the all-new, full-color Photoshop Elements 3: The Missing Manual (O'Reilly, US $39.95).

To us Photoshop Elements 3 is a lot more like the full Adobe Photoshop than the previous version of Elements and, hence, is more complicated. Quite a few simple operations, like typing text over an image and manipulating it, are much harder to do but have greater flexibilty or features. This "Missing Manual" should be of help to anyone using Elements, including us. [Bill Fox]

Report on 2005 O'Reilly ETech Conference--Exploring "Remix" Culture: Hackers and other innovators have embraced the do-it-yourself renaissance, tweaking here and integrating there, creating new tools and inspiring a resurgence of hands-on experimentation. These new, unexpected combinations--and the opportunities they present--were the driving force behind the 2005 edition of ETech, the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference, held in San Diego, California, March 14-17. The conference attracted over 800 attendees, making it one of the best-attended ETechs to date, illustrating both the popularity of "remix" and the pervasiveness of technology in our lives.

As new applications, services, and devices simultaneously converge and morph in unconventional ways, the lens of ETech--articulated on stage and throughout the program by conference chair Rael Dornfest and O'Reilly founder and CEO Tim O'Reilly--is particularly helpful in bringing new trends to light and focusing the future of computing technology for a wider audience. As in past years, ETech gave developers, IT decision-makers, lead users, engineers, and tech aficionados maximum exposure to new ideas and technologies through roll-up-your-sleeves tutorials, on-point plenary presentations, focused sessions that included late-breaking issues, and a relevant exhibit hall. Just a few of the intriguing speakers and topics at the conference included:

  • Technology historian George Dyson mapped Von Neumann's universe
  • Writer, consultant, and NYU professor Clay Shirky parsed folksonomy, metadata, and the phone as platform
  • JC Herz, author and defense researcher/consultant, addressed emerging technology use in the military
  • Joel Spolsky, founder of Fog Creek Software, discussed the ramifications of building communities with software
  • Author Kathy Sierra outlined her methods for creating passionate users
  • James Surowiecki, a staff writer at the "New Yorker," posed the question: Is it possible to be too connected?
  • Danny Hillis, co-chairman and chief technology officer of Applied Minds, discussed how technology is remixed at Applied Minds
  • Natalie Jeremijenko of UCSD described her methods of social activism using feral robotic dogs
  • Chris Anderson, editor-in-chief of "Wired Magazine," presented the economics of "The Long Tail"

ETech's inaugural Maker Fair illustrated the popularity and "mass amateurization" of gadgets and grassroots projects. This science fair-like evening event showcased projects from O'Reilly's new MAKE magazine, which launched in March.

From hacking a Mac mini into a 1950 Nash auto, predicting next-gen media, remixing DNA, sharing insights into the digitization of fabrication, exploring the swarming web, and much more, the 2005 O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference publicly celebrated just a few of the many ideas, projects, and people destined to change the way we use technology every day. Clean Up Your Old Mac Before Passing It On: Old Macs rarely go to the dump. They usually go to other people so there are a number of things you should do to it before you sell or bequeath it to someone else. These things are: de-authorize the computer from your iTunes account, back up the entire drive contents, wipe the entire drive not just "erase" it. The songs you paid for from Apple's iTunes Music Store can only be kept on five different Macs so be sure to deauthorize the old Mac to keeep the five alive. You never know which file you might need so it's best to copy all of them and keep them for at least awhile until you are sure you will never need them. Finally, wipe the entire hard drive by booting from the OS X CD and using "Zero all data" under the options button for Erase in the Disk Utility. More... [Dana Baggett]
