Game--Transport Fever 3 for Mac, $49.99 the Same Day as the PC, and It Needs an M2 Pro and 16GB

Transport Fever 3, the transport tycoon game from Swiss developer Urban Games, came out for the Mac on September 29, the same day as the Windows, Linux, PlayStation 5 and Xbox versions. Paradox Interactive's launch press release puts it "on PC, Mac, and Linux via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG," and the Steam page listed the Standard Edition at $49.99 on October 3. It runs only on Apple silicon, and the listed minimum is an M2 Pro with 16GB of memory, which leaves the MacBook Neo and every Intel Mac below it.
The Mac did not wait this time. Urban Games' August 25 release-date post promised that the game "will launch simultaneously for PC, Mac, and Linux," and the studio's launch post confirmed the release on September 29. The last game took longer to reach us: Urban Games' February 23, 2021 post on Transport Fever 2 opens "We are very happy to officially release the Mac version" and says that game was "released in December 2019 for Windows and Linux." That is 14 months, by our count.
It is a single-player tycoon game that runs from 1900 to 2030
You build rail, road, shipping and air routes and try to turn a profit on them. Paradox's release counts "more than 300 authentic vehicles" and, "for the first time in the series, helicopters," across four environments: temperate, desert, tropical and a new sub-arctic one. The feature list on Steam says 275+ vehicles. Urban Games' FAQ says the game covers transport history "starting in 1900 and running to 2030 and beyond," has a campaign of eight missions, and has no multiplayer: "The goal has been to make Transport Fever 3 the best single player experience possible." Mods come through an in-game browser built with mod.io, not the Steam Workshop, so that, the FAQ says, players on every store and both consoles get the same mods.
The archive has the genre's earlier stops on the Mac: our August 1999 pointer to a review of Railroad Tycoon 2, and our July 1999 note that SimCity 3000 for the Mac started shipping on July 27 of that year.
It needs an M2 Pro and 16GB, and nobody has published frame rates
The Steam page lists the Mac minimum as macOS Sequoia 15.7 or higher, an Apple M2 Pro, 16GB of memory and 90GB on an SSD, and names the 2023 14-inch MacBook Pro as its example. The recommended Mac is an M4 Pro with 24GB, with the 2024 Mac mini named. Apple's tech specs for the 2023 14-inch MacBook Pro show 16GB as the M2 Pro model's standard memory, so every M2 Pro configuration of it meets the minimum on chip and memory. The MacBook Neo does not: Apple's MacBook Neo specs list an A18 Pro and 8GB of unified memory on both models. Steam does not say whether a plain M2, M3 or M4 with 16GB will run the game. The M5 Pro Mac mini in our September 15 item has the recommended 24GB and was $1,699.
We have not installed the game, and no source we accept has published frame rates on a named Mac. Urban Games' known-issues page warns that "Meeting the minimum system requirements does not guarantee high frame rates in every situation," and says the simulation's load on the CPU grows with the map and the network. On October 3 that page's three open known issues were all console ones; none named the Mac. Steam showed 71 percent of 1,820 English-language user reviews as positive on October 3, which it labels Mostly Positive.
It costs $49.99, less 10 percent for Transport Fever 2 owners
The release-date post prices the Standard Edition at $49.99 and the Deluxe Edition, with six more vehicles, two landmarks and three maps, at $64.99 on the computer stores; a physical Collector's Edition is $119.99. Owners of Transport Fever 2 get 10 percent off the Standard or Deluxe Edition on the same platform, and Urban Games says that discount "will remain available until 14 days after launch," which by our count is October 13. If you want a copy without DRM, GOG's page lists the game as "officially supported on Windows, Linux, macOS" at $49.99 and says GOG games "can be played without an internet connection, totally offline."
Our October 10, 2002 note on Quake III Arena X v1.32 reported 50 fps at high settings and 1024x768 on our 800 MHz PowerBook G4. Twenty-four years later, by our count, the question is still which Mac runs the game, and we count a studio that made Mac users wait 14 months last time and not a day this time as good news, M2 Pro floor and all.
