Office 2021 for Mac Support Ends October 13, 2026--Microsoft Says No Extension and No More Security Fixes, and the Way Out Is $179.99 Once or $99.99 a Year

Microsoft's support for Office 2021 for Mac ends on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, the date on Microsoft's end-of-support page, which says "there will be no extension and no extended security updates" and that after that date the company will provide no technical support, bug fixes or security fixes for the suite. Microsoft says the apps "may continue to function." The word to notice is "may", because Microsoft gave Office 2019 for Mac a date to stop editing documents less than three years after its support ended.
Security fixes, updates and support all end on the same day
Microsoft's list of products ending support in 2026 puts Office 2021 and Office LTSC 2021 for Mac at October 13, and says that after it "there will be no new security updates, non-security updates, free or paid assisted support options or online technical content updates." The support page says the same in four lines: no security fixes for vulnerabilities "which may be subsequently reported or discovered," no software updates, no phone or chat support, and "most online help content will be retired." If you use Office 2021 at home, it adds, "you'll still be able to use it, but we recommend you upgrade."
Microsoft's release notes for Office for Mac, which "also apply to Office LTSC 2021 and 2024 and Office 2021 and 2024," listed version 16.113.3 (Build 26092714) of September 29 as the newest when we read them on October 3. None of these pages named the last build an Office 2021 license will run.
Office 2019 for Mac shows what "may" can mean
Support for Office 2019 for Mac ended on October 10, 2023. Microsoft's update page for the Mac gives July 13, 2026 as the date from which Office apps older than version 16.83 "can open and print files, but cannot edit, save, or create new files," which it calls "reduced functionality mode," and says that for Office 2019 "this issue cannot be resolved by updating or reinstalling." Version 16.83 is a release of March 12, 2024, and Microsoft's Office 2019 for Mac page says the October 2023 update, 16.78, "is the last build that supports Office 2019 license types."
Microsoft's page says only that this "happens when support for Microsoft Office apps is no longer continued for older operating systems or devices." TidBITS reported on June 1 that an expiring certificate was the cause: "Without a current certificate, the apps can't confirm you have a legitimate license." MacRumors added on June 2 that Microsoft had renewed the certificate but put it only in version 16.83. Both noted that the Office 2019 page once told owners their apps "will continue to function"; as it stood on October 3, dated May 15, 2026, it said they "won't lose any data."
Update Office 2021 first, then price what replaces it
The same update page tells Office 2021 owners to open any Office app, choose Check for Updates from the Help menu and let Microsoft AutoUpdate install what it finds. The release notes said on October 3 that a Mac needs macOS 14 Sonoma or later to receive updates at all, and the update page says Microsoft supports Office on "the three most recent major versions of macOS."
Microsoft's plan comparison page on October 3 listed Microsoft 365 Personal at $99.99 a year or $9.99 a month, Microsoft 365 Family at $129.99 a year for up to six people, and Office Home 2024, a "one-time purchase for PC or Mac," at $179.99. Microsoft's list for 2029 retires Office 2024 on October 9, 2029, so a copy bought on October 13, 2026 gets four days short of three years of fixes: about $60 a year by our arithmetic, against $99.99 for the subscription. Macworld put Office Home and Student 2021 at $149.99 on the eve of its October 5, 2021 launch, about $30 for each of its five years. The update page also points to the free Word, Excel and PowerPoint on the web.
Our archive weighed the same upgrade in 2001 and 2004
Twenty-two years ago to the day, our October 13, 2004 item reported Microsoft's security updates for Office 2004, Office v.X and Office 2001 for the Mac, all posted on one afternoon, and that we still ran v.X, having found little reason "to buy the relatively expensive upgrade to Office 2004." Our 2001 item on the price of waiting for Office for Mac OS X was headed "Do the Math." The math has a term it lacked then: Office 2019 for Mac, bought once, was given a date to stop saving.
If Office 2021 does all you need, we would update it now and keep it for the documents we write ourselves, and we would not open a stranger's attachment in a suite that gets no more security fixes.
