Free Apple iPhone Duo Developer Videos--Six Tech Talks, Two Group Labs, Forum Q&As on September 23 and the Xcode 27.1 Beta

Apple's free developer material for the iPhone Duo comes in two parts: six Tech Talk videos, two Group Labs and three Forum Q&As on Apple's Get Ready for iPhone Duo page, announced September 9, and the Xcode 27.1 beta of September 18, the first Xcode with the Duo SDKs and a Duo simulator. Apple says the phone arrives October 23, which leaves the people writing the apps you will run on it five weeks between the beta and the launch.

The page holds six videos, two labs and three Q&As

The six Tech Talks, all on Apple's page:

The two iPhone Duo Group Labs, dated September 16 and 17, are on the same page, with "More Group Labs coming soon." The Q&As were set for the Apple Developer Forums, and Apple's page scheduled all three for September 23: Photos & Camera from 7 to 9 a.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Pacific, SwiftUI and UIKit from 8 to 10 a.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Pacific. Apple's September 18 developer note adds workshops "around the world" on optimizing an app for all screen sizes, and says Figma and Sketch design kits for the Duo are in the Apple Design Resources; on September 20 that page listed the iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 UI Kit and an iPhone Duo bezel.

Xcode 27.1 beta is the tool that matters

Apple's September 16 note told developers the Duo will run iOS 27.1 when it becomes available October 23 and that an Xcode 27.1 beta with the SDKs and a simulator for "the all-new poses and orientations" would come later in the month. It came September 18, for Apple silicon Macs on macOS 26.6 or later, per MacRumors. The Xcode 27.1 beta release notes list Swift 6.4 and an iOS 27.1 SDK, and warn that the first Simulator launch can take several minutes and that StandBy and most app extensions do not run in the iPhone Duo Simulator.

9to5Mac puts the ladder plainly: apps built against the iOS 26 SDK need an iOS 27 build for basic Duo support, and apps made for iOS 27.1 take full advantage of the larger display. Apple's Preparing your app for iPhone Duo page says an app built with Xcode 26 or earlier does not extend under the status bar and camera, and that one that already works on iPad and Mac or resizes in iPhone Mirroring is "well on your way."

The precedent goes back to 2002

Developers first, and anyone with a Duo on order second: Apple's press release names Netflix, Zoom and Slack as apps already built for the folding design and says pre-orders open October 16 at $1,999. The form is an old one: in September 2002 the Apple Developer Connection put six introductory WWDC sessions on ADC TV, free with an ADC Online membership, in our 2002 item on the free WWDC sessions. We expect a good many apps to open on October 23 looking like an iPhone 18 app stretched wide, and this is the material that fixes them.
