First Look--macOS 27 Golden Gate Public Beta: The New Siri Is Good at Trivia and Bad at Finding Your Files

Disclosure: this First Look draws on Six Colors' extended hands-on with the public beta, Apple's release notes, and the current beta builds. We have not yet installed the beta on our own hardware; when we do, this report will be updated in place.

Start with the good news: Golden Gate walks back a lot of Tahoe's design. Jason Snell's Six Colors first look, written after running the developer beta on his main Mac since WWDC, calls it "a significant design rollback" that makes the system more approachable. That matches every screenshot we have seen; the menu bar is legible again.

Siri is the headline and the mixed bag. General-knowledge answers are, in Snell's word, "very good." Ask it about your own stuff and it stumbles: it repeatedly failed to find a specific PDF on disk. Because Siri now lives inside Spotlight, Command-Space launches apps instantly but you wait for an "Ask Siri" affordance before you can ask a question. The full feature set needs an M3 and 12GB; on an 8GB M1 or M2 Mac you get the basic assistant, which is fine and also not the reason to upgrade. Photos: Clean Up is better at filling in backgrounds. Extend, which grows a photo beyond its edges, invents things, including furniture and a roof that were not there. Spatial Reframe looks synthetic. Safari's automatic tab grouping and Finder's suggested file names both work and both suggest things you would not have chosen. Sidecar gains touch on the iPad, and it is, in Snell's phrase, "delightfully boring," which is the highest compliment for a feature like that. The Passwords app's automatic password changer succeeded on 3 of 39 sites in his test; it is not done. Mr. Macintosh has the admin-side changes, and Macworld and MacRumors track the full feature list.

Stability on beta 6 is release-candidate territory with occasional reboots and a few third-party menu bar utilities broken. Verdict: install it on the machine you can afford to reboot, wait for 27.1 on the one you cannot, and treat every generative Photos feature as a suggestion, not a fact. [Macs Only!]
